Ways to reignite new year’s resolutions at work

Posted by Tara Doherty on 2/22/22 1:00 AM

Did you start 2022 with new year’s resolutions and an abundance of optimism? Have you also noticed yourself feeling less and less motivated as we make our way into March? That’s okay, you’re human just like the rest of us. It’s normal to feel your motivation level dwindle after the first few months. Don’t wave the white flag on your resolutions just yet! Let’s see what it takes to respark your ambition.

In this week’s blog, our experts outline five ways that you can reignite those new year’s resolutions to reach your work-inspired goals.

  1. Be SMART 📚

Specific: What exactly do you want to accomplish? Do you want to increase your sales? Maybe pitch that idea you had to your boss? No matter your goal, identify exactly what it is and be precise.

Measurable: Decide how you want to measure your goal, whether with a handmade bulletin journal or a simple checklist—track your path to success. There is nothing better than putting a productive checkmark next to your to-dos!

Achievable: To set yourself up for success, stop and ask yourself, “Is this goal realistic for me?” Be completely honest with yourself; it’s great to have high expectations, but don’t set yourself up for disappointment.

Relevant: Why do you want to achieve this goal? Will it get you a raise or promotion? Will it bring you more happiness or confidence? Whatever your reason is, identify it. Imagine your future self, and then start showing up as that person.

Time: Time frames are one of the most critical factors in setting any goal. You want to find balance. Make an incremental plan to prevent yourself from falling off track. Giving yourself realistic, mini due dates is a great way to maintain motivation.

  1. Patience is 🔑

Time can either be your best friend or worst enemy. Remind yourself that you will not become a new person overnight, and give yourself grace. The changes that you need to make to reach workplace goals will take practice and consistency. Eventually, these new changes will become a part of your daily routine. Until then, patience is vital; enjoy the journey along the way to achieving your goals.

  1. Don’t 💪 Give 💪 Up 💪

When it comes to setbacks along the journey, it’s not a matter of if it’s a matter of when. Slip-ups are inevitable. Just because you slip up one time or maybe even five times doesn’t mean that all previous progress has been erased. Keep going!

When it comes to workplace goals, a slip-up can seem catastrophic. You want to perform well and want your coworkers—especially your boss—to notice you’re trying. Recognize how hard you have been working to reach your goal, and remind yourself that everyone in your office has also made a mistake. Yes, even your boss.

  1. Track your progress with a coworker 👭

Good news is supposed to be shared, right? Why keep your new year’s goals a secret then? Share your workplace goals with a trusted coworker, friend, or mentor. Telling just one person about your goals is a great way to turn them into reality. According to research from the University of Georgia, self-control is contagious; by sharing goals with someone you trust, both of you will be able to keep yourselves accountable. Friendly reminder: accountability leads to achievement.

  1. Be compassionate 😇

The way we speak to ourselves impacts our ability to do things. To help yourself reach a goal, change how you think about doing an action. For example, instead of saying, “I really should be working on this report right now,” say, “I’m going to work on this report right now,” or “I am choosing to do this report right now.” This may seem like a small change, but small changes lead to big achievements. Even if the habits you begin building are minor, they will pay off over time. Chances are you’ll begin feeling more motivated and confident simply by changing the messages you send to yourself.

Setting and achieving goals can be easier said than done. But with patience, time, grace, and perseverance, you can achieve your workplace goals. We hope these tips will help respark your determination to tackle these goals throughout the remainder of the year.
